SEASON 2022

Proudly Ambitious

A culmination of 21 storied years of Chilly Ultimate is on the horizon, looking towards the future, and drawing heavily from its past. As Victoria and the nation begin to open up again, the club will be looking to build on the progress made early in 2021 with a fresh-faced and driven committee to guide the growth and development of the club and its members.

Chilly Ultimate is seeking player interest for the 2022 Australian National Season. As with previous years, the club will be looking to select two open teams; Hot and Fresh Chilly. In the women’s division this year our plan is to select two teams; Spicy Chilly and our inaugural women’s development team, Zesty Chilly.

With the uncertainty surrounding future dates, precise details for events will be released closer to dates. Players selected will be expected to attend all tournaments in which the relevant team is participating.

Opens Season

Andy Steeds

Opens Coach

Andy Steeds first began his ultimate career in 2006, when he started at Birmingham University, quickly becoming involved with leadership and planning when he joined the coaching team in 2008. After spending several years playing and coaching through the UKU tour, Steedsy joined Chilly in 2013, quickly becoming a mainstay in the handler set, before taking on the presidency of the club in 2014 (lasting two years in the role!). In 2015 Steeds was involved with the leadership/coaching structure for Chilly’s x/y structure at the time and has learned from the wealth of experience in and around the club. This will be Andrew’s first ever crack at taking on the role of an off-field coach and is incredibly excited to help create a world-class team ethos and culture!

Tom Rogacki

Opens Head Coach
Tom will be heading our Open division program alongside two off-field coaches, utilising his wealth of experience to usher in the next wave of Chilly success. His predominant role will be to guide the strategic vision, structures, and ethos that will be echoed across both teams. Throughout his storied career, Tom has left little undiscovered, representing Australia on the world stage countless times and dominating the domestic Ultimate scene for over 20 years.

Alistair Don

Al Don

Opens Coach

As one of our off-field coaches for the upcoming season, Al Don will be bringing a wealth of experience as one of Australia’s long standing intelligent handlers. Playing the sport since 1998, and representing Australia on six occasions, Al comes from a time where non-playing coaches were a mythical luxury (that he himself did not experience as a player until 2014) but has been a mainstay in team leadership groups since 2001. Al’s greatest strengths as a coach come from his ability to communicate the complex things simply, and his technical prowess at empowering individuals to better their disc skills.

Opens Structure & Split

In season 2022, the Chilly open’s teams will begin their journey together in one squad, prior to splitting into the two marquee open team brands; Hot and Fresh.

The expectation this season will be that all players who are selected into this squad will be training and competing with a focus on making both teams as competitive as possible.

Both Hot and Fresh will be setting their sights on division one ultimate this year, and will be training accordingly.

Prior to the split into Hot and Fresh, Sunday training will be split into two time slots, with half of the squad attending each, respectively. These sessions will be coached by a different member of our coaching staff each week and will prioritise different aspects of ultimate (such as throwing technique, game scenario, or fitness).

Each Sunday training time slot will be scheduled with one women’s team and one open’s team in order to build camaraderie between gender divisions, as well as division one/two splits.

The club will conduct two formal tryouts for the Open’s division. It is also recommended that prospective players attend Chilly League as selectors will be present at the event. Tryouts will be at Sir Zelman Cowen Park on the following dates for Opens:

  • Wednesday 10th November 7-9pm

  • Wednesday 17th November 7-9pm

Bruce will be heading up Spicy Chilly and working very closely with the rest of the coaching staff to ensure an excellent standard, whilst having a focus on developing a club culture. Bruce has been an influential figure in the ultimate community throughout the 2010s with both his on and off-field talent. Adelaide Dennis

Playing Mentor
Over the course of the coming season, Adelaide will be working with Chilly's women's division contingent as a player mentor. This will involve working with the players towards developing individual attributes to improve their capacity as athletes and players. Her accomplishments extend to strong international campaigns with both the Crocs and Firetails Australian representative teams as well as a strong two seasons representing Canberra against the best in the country in the Australian Ultimate League.country in the Australian Ultimate League.

Michelle Phillips

Program Assistant Coach
Mish will be playing an assisting role throughout our women's program, involved in training, coaching strategy, player development and athletic preparation. This will take form predominantly as the assistant coach to our lead women's team Spicy Chilly. Mish has also been involved with developing generations of Australian ultimate players as a coach, notably through her work with Bauhaus (2x National Champions) and the U24 Australian Stingrays (Bronze, 2018 WU24UC).

Simon Banks

Zesty Head Coach
Having come onto the scene through Deakin Ultimate in 2017, Simon has gone from strength to strength with his communication capabilities and his passion for developing up and coming ultimate players. Simon has been headhunted for this role due to his strong communication skills and his ability to get the best out of athletes who don’t necessarily know what they’re capable of. Working in tandem with Mish, Adelaide, and Bruce, Simon is dedicated and excited to take on the role of head coach for the inaugural Zesty Chilly team, and believes that this program will be the perfect pathway for players who want to develop in a clearly defined system, and are looking to take both their on-field skills and frisbee IQ to the next level.

In order for Zesty to go ahead this season, we are requiring a minimum number of players to commit to the season (18). Were we not to meet this minimum requirement we will postpone running Zesty Chilly until the following season, and seek alternative arrangements for those who had prioritised Zesty this season.

Fees will be collected from players in monthly instalments over the season based on estimated costs and corrected with either a final payment or a refund at the end of the season.
